By C. Joseph Doyle

C. Joseph Doyle explores the historical development and decline of Christian civilization from its earliest roots to the modern era. He traces four major “Christendoms”: the first rising from Rome’s conversion under Theodosius, the second rooted in medieval Europe’s unity of faith and culture, the third shaped by the Counter-Reformation and global missionary expansion, and the fourth now emerging in the Catholic growth of Africa and the developing world. Doyle attributes much of the modern West’s moral and religious decay to the self-inflicted wounds following Vatican II and the abandonment of traditional doctrine and worship. Despite the collapse of faith in Europe and America, he sees divine providence at work in the flourishing of Catholicism in the Global South. He concludes with a call to defend the Church, restore tradition, and support faithful institutions like the St. Benedict Center as seeds of a possible fifth Christendom.
