In this talk, Brian Kelly argues that the virtue of patriotism, properly understood, is a Catholic virtue grounded in the Fourth Commandment to honor one's father and mother. He refutes the modern, liberal notion that patriotism is an evil, asserting instead that it is a noble extension of the love and piety owed to one's family and homeland. Kelly distinguishes this true patriotism from the vice of nationalism, which places the nation above God and the moral law. He contends that for Catholics, love of country must always be subordinate to love of God and fidelity to the teachings of the Church. Ultimately, the speech is a call for Catholics to reclaim a rightly ordered love for their country, seeing it as a gift from God and a sphere in which they are called to live out their faith
