Sister Maria Philomena, MICM — Inheriting the Earth: The Combined Strength of Meekness and Hope
The goal of her talk, says Sister Maria Philomena, M.I.C.M., director of the Saint Augustine Institute of Wisdom, is to focus on two virtues that will enable us to cope with the current crisis of abuse and abusers. After defining both hope and meekness, Sister uses the example of Susanna in the Old Testament to illustrate how these virtues combined to overthrow the unjust judgment of a court led astray by false witnesses. Applying these same virtues to our own times, Sister shows how parents especially can hurt their children by falling into either the extreme of insufficient discipline or an overbearingness that tries to force rather than foster the growth of virtue. Meekness moderates our tendency to dominate others, and will prevent us from falling into the abusive traits we justly lament in others.
