Theme: The Catholic Reconquest: Motives, Models, and Methods
Title: La Reconquistadora: The Virgin Mary and Christian Combat
By Br. André Marie, M.I.C.M.
Our Lady has several titles honoring her immeasurable fortitude. She is called Our Lady of Victory, Destroyer of All Heresies, and in the Litany of Loreto, Virgin Most Powerful. The liturgy for the feast of the Immaculate Conception has adopted a stirring verse from the Canticles, which describes her beauty and strength: “fair as the moon” and “terrible as an army set in array.” So, “The Reconqueror” is fittingly condign. Brother André focuses his talk on the cardinal virtue of fortitude and how it served Catholic fighting men in defeating the Mohammedans in Spain and at the battle of Lepanto. Fortitude is not just an asset for Catholics, Brother says, it is a necessary virtue, just as are prudence, justice, and temperance. In fact, he argues, one cannot really possess, in the sense of a habit, any of these four virtues, unless one possesses them all. This talk is more than theoretical, it is practical. Listen to it and find out how to exercise this virtue with Mary as your exemplar.
