Re-Rooting a Rootless Society — Some Reflections on the Importance of the Physical for our Spiritual Lives

Theme: Resisting the Revolutionary Reset: Virtues, Skills, and Catholic Good Sense for Flourishing amid the Madness

Sister explores how reconnecting with the physical world—through farming, raising animals, and local self-sufficiency—can restore both human and spiritual integrity. She describes how her community’s journey into small-scale agriculture deepened their understanding of work, sacrifice, and God’s creation, transforming daily labor into a means of grace. Drawing from her experience with livestock and gardening, she emphasizes that living close to the land fosters humility, gratitude, and awareness of divine providence. By “re-rooting” in the natural order, individuals become more integrated, grounded, and capable of sustaining families and communities amid modern instability. Ultimately, she concludes that cultivating the land and participating in creation’s cycles brings people closer to God—because “we must grow roots in order to fly.”
