Charles Coulombe — Romanticism: Seeing the World in a New Way

While Romanticism is a concept hard to pin down—a fact which Mr. Charles Coulombe, author of The Pope’s Legion and over a dozen other titles, highlights as both its strength and its weakness—it is something we should never lose touch with in as much as its guiding principle is a conviction in the existence of realities beyond those we can see. Time and time again, Coulombe says, Romanticism showed itself to be a preparatio evangelium in a way that the Enlightenment, with its disdain for the supernatural, could never be. Mr. Coulombe traces the history of Romanticism in the US through such persons as the Grimm brothers, Sir Walter Scott, and Washington Irving, and shows how much our history and present-day culture was affected by those who aspired to something better than what they had.
