Theme: Catholic Saints & Heroes: Models for our Modern Age

Title: Saint Maximilian Kolbe: Our Lady's Knight

The talk presents the life of St. Maximilian Kolbe as a modern 20th‑century saint whose whole mission was to “love without limit” and give everything for Our Lady, the Immaculata. It traces his formation in poor, deeply Catholic Poland, his childhood vision of two crowns (purity and martyrdom), and his choice of religious life and Marian zeal over an early desire for military glory. Kolbe founded the Militia Immaculata and massive publishing and radio apostolates in Poland and Japan, using modern technology to spread devotion to Mary and to work for the conversion of the Church’s perceived enemies, especially Freemasons and Jews. Under Nazi occupation, he turned his Marian city into a place of assistance and spiritual help for prisoners, including Jews, and was eventually arrested and sent to Auschwitz, where his dignity, joy, and pastoral care deeply affected fellow inmates and even guards. His sanctity culminated when he voluntarily took the place of a condemned prisoner with a family, dying after days of prayer and hymn‑singing in the starvation bunker, thus receiving the “red crown” of martyrdom on the vigil of the Assumption.
