Baring is a sterling example of what Hickson provocatively calls a “subtle” channel of grace. Why “subtle”? Because God’s providential mercy, as it runs through the life and is manifest in the works of this great poet, is a treasure that is discovered only by a reader who has, or at least desires and appreciates purity of heart. “Elegiac” is not only a style of composition but the word also connotes a yearning lament for nobler days gone by.
